THE POLITICAL SCIENCE SOCIETY

The Political Science Society (PSSOC) was set up in 1969 to bridge the gulf between the Political Science (PS) Department and the student body. This has been achieved through a multitude of events that have enabled a combination of the staff of the PS Department interacting with students and events that have raised the overall interest in the field of Politics.

For our newest projects, we are now in the process of trying to increase the involvement of NUS students in MUN through our participation in Asian International MUN, Hong Kong MUN, Harvard WorldMUN, London International MUN and MUN Salamanca. In light of our involvement in international conferences, we have expanded NUS’s Model United Nations record by establishing a Model UN wing under the Political Science Society, thus inculcating a greater awareness about the globalised world and in the international community at large amongst Singapore’s greatest asset; our youth today to prepare them to be leaders of tomorrow.

WHAT IS MODEL UNITED NATIONS?

The United Nations is one of the most important and recognized world bodies, being highly significant to the international community as a medium of conflict resolution and discussion. Model United Nations Conferences, are essentially simulations of the United Nations.

Instead of representatives from different countries, students represent the member nations of the United Nations during the conference as country delegates. Delegates discuss issues which are relevant to the international community, plan plausible solutions, campaign and lobby for one’s cause, and reach consensus in the form of passing relevant resolutions. There is strict adherence to the regulations and procedures of the United Nations during such conferences.

These conferences allow students to gain insight into the workings of the United Nations, as well as a deeper understanding regarding some of the problems encountered in international relations. They also aid in building important life-skills like professionalism, eloquence and diplomacy.
